Fighting back

Well, my site has gotten popular with one particular set of users. Spam bots. Im getting about 10 spam comments a day now, but luckily help is here. One of the great things about using Drupal to power my site is that when I want to add a new feature, 90% of the time somebody has already written a module that I can just add to the site. So I have now added the captcha module to the site, forcing users that aren't logged in to answer a simple question when they leave a comment. This should hopefully filter out some of the spam bots. And peopl

The Prestige

A great man once said "It's a kind of magic." That man's name was Christopher Lambert in the excellent movie Highlander. Today I saw another movie featuring a different "kind of magic". It was called The Prestige and here is my review.

It's pretty great. Not GREAT great, but it's a well acted, well directed, intelligently written film that outshines the majority of films that I have seen recently. There's just something classy about it that puts it a level above a lot of other, more generic films. I knew I wanted to see the film because after seeing the trailers, I knew it looked good but had no idea where the story was going to go or what the characters would be like. It really was going to be a mystery, and what a mystery it is.

Its all gone quiet over here

I finally fulfilled my life's ambition and am now the proud owner of the greatest possession in the known universe: A Microsoft Xbox 360. Unsurprisingly, it's taking up all my time, so expect not a lot of new content for awhile.

Plus I keep getting spammed by the spammy spambot bastards, so am working on getting some kind of filter to stop them...

Gotta run. Back to my new toy.

In the meantime, if you're bored why not check out The Framley Examiner.

Bad things that happened this week

I lost my debit card. I had to wait 90 minutes at the doctors, to end up spending only 2 minutes with the doctor. I had to work late on my birthday. I found out the Xbox 360 game I had ordered from Amazon was on it's way to me, but the console was out of stock so I would have nothing to play it on.

But I did well at poker last night, coming in 7th in the tournament I enter from time to time. My previous best was 20th, so quite an improvement really!

Hope next week turns out better, and it should cos I will finally by getting my beloved xbox!

What I'm watching on TV

Well the "fall TV season" is now in full effect here in the States, so I thought I would ramble on about some of the shows I enjoy. First, here are the TV shows I watch on a regular basis:

  • Lost - While it has fallen victim to the flaw that I predicted when the show started (That dragging out the story via constant flashbacks would start to get old) I am still glued to the program just to see what is going to happen.
  • Extras - The second series of Ricky Gervais' sitcom is still hilariously funny, especially the ridiculousness of Gervais' character's new-found stardom in his own completely terrible hit sitcom.

XBox 360 + Game for $399.98

Amazon now has a great deal where you can save $50 on selected Xbox 360 games when purchasing with the console. As the four games eligible for the deal are all $49.99, it basically means you are getting a free game.

With free shipping and no tax, this deal probably saves you around $70-80 on the price you would pay in a store for the premium pack.

The titles included in the promotion are:

  • Oblivion
  • Dead Rising
  • Madden 2007
  • Lego Star Wars 2
  • The discount will be applied when you go to the checkout, so

Ultraviolet

The 3rd in my "terrible films with gun-toting women" viewing list - it was just as bad as the other two. With perhaps the most nonsensical plot of them all : In the future, people with a "vampire" like disease are treated as an underclass, kept in camps and generally repressed - there's some kind of cure/weapon/mcguffin that everybody is after and some stuff blows up and lots of people die in ridiculously staged sword/gun fights.

And that's it...avoid.

Underworld : Evolution

Probably the least horrible of my recent batch of bad films, Underworld 2 has some good bits and is generally less ridiculous than Aeon Flux and Ultraviolet but suffers from many of the same faults, leaving it pretty much a mess.

The film starts with a prologue which helpfully explains the plot that is about to happen, which kind of ruins the first two-thirds of the film as characters try and uncover the secrets that we have been shown upfront. I like to call this the "Tomorrow Never Dies" method of plot twists - the Bond film that starts with us seeing a "stealth boat" attempting to start an international war, which is then followed by an hour of Bond investigating the incident only to find out that...it was a "stealth boat" attempting to start an international war. Fancy that! It robs the film of half the suspense when your characters are trying to uncover a mystery that you already know the answer to.

Aeon Flux

With not much on TV at the moment I have been renting some really bad films that I hadn't got round to watching. Three of them are very similar sci-fi themed movies with "kick-ass" female action heroees: Underworld 2, Ultraviolet and Aeon Flux.

Aeon Flux is apparently based on a decent cartoon/anime series, but it's not something I have ever seen. This future apparently is a cross between the Matrix and Bill & Ted, with half the population walking around brightly lit cities with ridiculous "futuristic" costumes on, and the other half in brooding dark, Neo-wannabe leatheresque outfits.

Bad week

I've not been posting much recently as I have had the bad news that one of my best friends was seriously injured when he was stabbed in a street robbery.

He's doing much better now, but he was pretty seriously hurt and still not sure if he is going to be able to speak again or breath normally. So not been in a very cheerful mood really, but I'm about to go to New York for the weekend so thought I would try and put up a f
