Another classic of American Cinema

Bloodz vs Wolvez.

"Prepare for the ultimate battle of evil when two rival supernatural gangs wage war on the streets of New York City. The Bloodz are affluent vampires who rule downtown – controlling real estate, blood banks and financial institutions. The Wolvez are the werewolves who rule the night in the New York’s upper ghetto. Now, it’s a battle to the death to determine who will run the city in the day, the night, and for all eternity..."

License to RAWK!!!

Oh dear. I present for your viewing displeasure, the theme song from Casino Royale, the new James Bond film.

I didn't know that by "going back to Bond's roots" meant the 1980s. I mean, I love Rocky IV as much as the next man, but I don't think returning to the 80s cheesy rock film themes is going to be what makes James Bond great again...

My birthday list

For the benefit of anybody who wants to buy me a present for my birthday, and for the interest of anyone who cares what kinds of things I like, here is my list of things I would not be displeased to receive on my birthday:

  • An Xbox 360 ;)
  • Amazon.com gift certificates
  • X-Men : The Last Stand (DVD)
  • Oblivion (PC Game)
  • Lego Star Wars 2 (PC Game)
  • A bowling ball.

Far Cry

Another game that I've had for ages but not been able to really play, and again I've now played it through to completion.

Far Cry is set on a remote desert island where mysterious experiments are being carried out - think Lost with more guns. It's technically stunning with great water, open spaces and lush scenery. The enemy AI is really good and you find yourself in some great gun battles. There's some cool vehicle sequences and some great set-pieces.

However, about 2/3 of the way through the game it really runs out of steam and becomes a "run through the corridors" blastfest instead of the innovative game it has been before.

Call of Duty 2

This was one of the first games that wouldn't run on my old PC, becoming virtually unplayable after the first level or so. Now, with my shiny new graphics card it runs great and I've finally completed it!

As shooters go, it's a lot of fun, but as World War 2 games go, I think we've reached a bit of a plateau. After Medal of Honour blew everyone away with the Omaha beach landing stuff, it's going to be hard to keep up that level of innovation. It's technically great with exciting missions, but is just missing that "wow" factor that games need these days. Evo

United 93

United 93 tells the story of the only plane to be hijacked on 9-11 not to hit its intended target. Passengers, aware of the fate of the other planes, rushed the terrorists and the plane crashed into the ground.

Choosing to watch this on 9-11 was probably both a good and a bad move. Good, because it made me watch it with a more serious attitude. Bad, because it really is a powerful film and watching it in a serious frame of mind made it quite an emotional experience.

At times through the film I felt both sick to my stomach and close to tears. It's probably the closest experience you can have to recreating the emotion of hearing the news about 9-11 for the first time.

September 11 - Five years on

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. I am sat here watching the film United 93 on DVD, and wanted to put my thoughts on the tragedy up here.

I remember where I was when I first heard something was happening - I was walking through the high street in Melton Mowbray when I saw the World Trade Center on TV. It must have been soon after the first plane hit, because the ticker at the bottom of the page just said something like "'LIGHT AIRCRAFT' CRASHES INTO WORLD TRADE CENTER". I, as everyone else did, either sensed something big was happening, or just had that strange fascination with seeing disaster on such a large scale - and I rushed home to watch the coverage on TV. By the time I got home the second plane had just crashed and they were starting to call it an attack.

A new one from the archives: Bunking Off

Those of you who read my childhood epic The Longest Day, might enjoy this blast from my past: Bunking Off is a script that my friends and I wrote for a drama class when I was 15.

It tells the story of 5 men who are trapped together in a nuclear bunker when war breaks out. It is a harrowing tale of survival and... ah, bollocks - it was our attempt at a Red Dwarf style sitcom, complete with ripped off jokes. We didn't take drama classes very seriously - we had signed up for "radio/video production" and a teacher left so we got shifted to a drama class. We even added a scene where they play football so that we could play during rehearsals...
