RSS feed now available

Just added an RSS feed to my site, and it appears to be working! Which must be a first. So if you want to keep updated with my site, you can get the RSS via the orange button marked RSS.

More changes on the way

I am in the process of adding the ability for me to upload files to the site, so I can more easily share my wonderful creations with you all. It is accessible by the cunningly named FILE ARCHIVE button on the left navbar, but is only in an early stage, I plan to have it sorted into categories etc so I can also post photos and have a picture gallery etc.

As always, stay tuned for more improvements.

Making an iPod cradle

Well, yesterday I finally completed my second iPod project - this time with no blood! I wanted to make a cradle for my iPod to place it on the dash so that I could change tracks without having to divert attention from the road too much.

I started with an aborted attempt at making one from duct tape, before deciding wood might be a better option. I placed my iPod on my scanner, loaded the image in Photoshop, and created a template by drawing over the top of the ipod image. I wanted a simple design that just has a back plate and two wooden pieces at the side to hold the iPod in place. The notch in the back is because I keep the iPod in a rubber case that has a clip on the back so without a notch, it wouldn't lay flat. The gap in the bottom is to let you plug in a car-charger to the iPod while in the cradle.

New features

I'm currently adding and tweaking some things on the site: The ability for users to add comments are coming, and I have tweaked the archive page to only display the start of a story and provide a link to the full story. So if you see any comment buttons that don't work or seem a bit wrong - I'm probably in the middle of altering something.

Unbreakable 2?

Not actually Unbreakable 2, but a trailer for another film about a "real" superhero - it's called Special, and there is a trailer online now. I thought it was interesting as it takes almost a 180 from the premise of Unbreakable. Unbreakable was really about a guy who didn't want to believe he was a superhero even when the evidence was right in front of his eyes. Special appears to be about a man who really wants to be a superhero, even though reality suggests otherwise.

Hacking my iTrip - and my fingers!

My wife bought me an iTrip for Christmas, as I'm sure you all know it's a little device you plug into your iPod that lets you listen to your iPod through your car or home FM stereo. It's a great idea, but the actual device is a bit temperemental in getting good reception due to the weak power of the FM transmission.

You end up driving along trying to adjust frequencies every 10 minutes, which is not easy due to the fiddly nature of the iTrip controls.

So today, I decided to try and follow these great instructions for boosting the power of your iTrip. It basically involves cutting open the casing of the device and prising the aerial so that it pokes out the top. This part went well, until the part where I needed some wire to wrap around the aerial. While slicing away at some coax the razor sharp knife slipped and cut into two of my fingers - one pretty badly, it kept bleeding for about half an hour, and grazing the other one. After a brief pause to stop the bleeding and patch up my fingers I continued, wrapping wire around the aerial and then adding heat shrink to the aerial to make it a bit nicer looking.

What If? Hollywood Edition

The first in a new regular (maybe) feature, my photoshop skills give you a glimpse into an alternative Hollywood where we ponder the what-ifs of movie history? This week, Tom Hanks went from being a star of screwball 80s comedies into a respected actor - What if a different comedian got the breaks that Hank did?

And secondly, Tarantino took a huge gamble and gave has-been actor and forgotten legend John Travolta a massive break when he cast him in Pulp Fiction. What if Tarantino had taken a chance on a different kind of has-been?

Update Alpha

The site now has a links page up and running. I will be adding more of my favourite sites to it and continue to make the page more useful.

I actually use my links page as the home page on my PC, and have found its a great way to eliminate the need for copying all my bookmarks between different computers I use. I just add them to my website instead and when I move to a new PC I only need one bookmark adding - my page! So expect the links page to develop from a simple list of links to a more organised layout with specific categories etc. That's all for now...

Welcome to the world of PHP!

Finally, the switch has been made - about a year after paying for PHP hosting and planning to learn enough to switch my site over to PHP. Forgive the mess for now, I just wanted to get the site up and working to a bare minimum standard, so expect more content to be transferred from the old site and a more pleasant look for the site soon!
