my life

DHL are a bunch of incompetent idiots (so are Comcast, Budget and Lowes)

I wait at home all day today for a package from DHL (a large item that needs a signature). The tracking website informs me that the delivery driver took it out at 930am. It rolls around to 5pm and it has not yet arrived. I call DHL Customer Service, am told that they make deliveries up to 8pm and that someone from the local office will call me back to give me an update on when the driver will be here.

At 715pm a lady calls me and says she has just spoke to the driver, he is nearby and will be here before 8pm. At 830pm the package has still not arrived, I call back and am told the local office is now closed and all they can do is have someone call me in the morning.

Buying a house

The most stressful things I have ever done are: Proposing to my wife, Getting married, Buying a house.

I had so many people tell me it was going to be so stressful and horrible, and I was like "oh, I can imagine". Well, you can't. It's the second worst process I've ever gone through (the worst thing is something I can't talk about on a public blog). From putting together offers (and having to sign/resign and fax back and forth), applying for a mortgage (and having to fax them evidence etc) and home inspections and blah blah blah. It's just really painful and was complicated by the fact that I flew off on vacation the minute we had our offer accepted, leaving my wife holding the reins. During the peak busy period at her work.

Frak Google Maps

I was all excited to have been able to get free tickets online to a special cinema screening of this week's "fall finale" of Battlestar Galactica.

I was slightly less excited when Google Maps decided to give me two incorrect street names for my directions, causing me to take wrong turns for several miles in rush hour traffic.

And no, I didnt get there in time to watch the screening.

Bastards.

Its all gone quiet over here

I finally fulfilled my life's ambition and am now the proud owner of the greatest possession in the known universe: A Microsoft Xbox 360. Unsurprisingly, it's taking up all my time, so expect not a lot of new content for awhile.

Plus I keep getting spammed by the spammy spambot bastards, so am working on getting some kind of filter to stop them...

Gotta run. Back to my new toy.

In the meantime, if you're bored why not check out The Framley Examiner.

Bad things that happened this week

I lost my debit card. I had to wait 90 minutes at the doctors, to end up spending only 2 minutes with the doctor. I had to work late on my birthday. I found out the Xbox 360 game I had ordered from Amazon was on it's way to me, but the console was out of stock so I would have nothing to play it on.

But I did well at poker last night, coming in 7th in the tournament I enter from time to time. My previous best was 20th, so quite an improvement really!

Hope next week turns out better, and it should cos I will finally by getting my beloved xbox!

Bad week

I've not been posting much recently as I have had the bad news that one of my best friends was seriously injured when he was stabbed in a street robbery.

He's doing much better now, but he was pretty seriously hurt and still not sure if he is going to be able to speak again or breath normally. So not been in a very cheerful mood really, but I'm about to go to New York for the weekend so thought I would try and put up a f

September 11 - Five years on

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. I am sat here watching the film United 93 on DVD, and wanted to put my thoughts on the tragedy up here.

I remember where I was when I first heard something was happening - I was walking through the high street in Melton Mowbray when I saw the World Trade Center on TV. It must have been soon after the first plane hit, because the ticker at the bottom of the page just said something like "'LIGHT AIRCRAFT' CRASHES INTO WORLD TRADE CENTER". I, as everyone else did, either sensed something big was happening, or just had that strange fascination with seeing disaster on such a large scale - and I rushed home to watch the coverage on TV. By the time I got home the second plane had just crashed and they were starting to call it an attack.

Mason Reloading

So my wife goes away for the week leaving me with 3 days off work in which I intend to work on my websites and play games with my new graphics card. So what happens? Both my computers start having problems preventing me from getting anything done.

My work laptop, which I tend to use to do my website stuff sat on the couch has started giving me the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (TM), and I can't reimage the HD until Tuesday when I'm back at work. Strike one.

Meanwhile, my desktop PC has come down with a virus, which (probably coincidentally) happened around the time I installed Internet Explorer 7. The virus started off just closing internet windows but now it's stopping all internet access and limiting my access to admin features. I'm in the middle of backing up my media and documents from it, and will be reinstalling it soon after 4 different antivirus programs failed to clean the infection. You'd think these days that if the software can detect a virus it could clean it, but all of them kept saying it couldn't be cleaned! AARRRGHHHHHHH....
