Gun for Xbox 360

I don't know if it's just me, but recently a lot of games I have played seem to be missing something. Fun. Technically they look awesome and there's a lot to do, but I just haven't felt the need to sit in front of them for hours and try to complete them. Enter Gun.

I had read some pretty good reviews, and being an older game I knew I could pick it up pretty cheap and I'm glad I did. This is what I wish more games were like. A story to keep you hooked, but not so full of details and backstory to bore you. A variety of missions, but it's not too long to get tedious. It's challenging in places, but not so hard to make you give up.

Shitting a brick...

Most unexpected, yet predictable news I have heard this weekend is that the people behind the awesome Lego Star Wars are going to make Lego Indiana Jones game next year. Yeah! Also, tucked away at the bottom of the article is the announcement of Lego Batman.

Article here: Lego Indiana Jones

Other Lego games they need to do:

Lego James Bond

Lego Lord of the Rings

Lego Matrix

Lego Godfather... :)

Marvel : Ultimate Alliance (Xbox 360)

I asked for either this or Gears of War for Christmas, and got this - and glad I did cos its one of the best games I have ever played. Maybe being a huge comics fan helps, as half the fun of the game is the fact that you get to play as like 20 different superheroes (Wolverine, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Thor, Iron Man...etc.) against dozens of the famous Marvel supervillains (Doctor Doom, Galactus, Super Skrull, Loki...etc.) But on top of that, the gameplay is responsive, fun, long-lasting, with lots of replay value with things to unlock (like extra characters).

XBox 360 + Game for $399.98

Amazon now has a great deal where you can save $50 on selected Xbox 360 games when purchasing with the console. As the four games eligible for the deal are all $49.99, it basically means you are getting a free game.

With free shipping and no tax, this deal probably saves you around $70-80 on the price you would pay in a store for the premium pack.

The titles included in the promotion are:

Oblivion

Dead Rising

Madden 2007

Lego Star Wars 2

The discount will be applied when you go to the checkout, so

Far Cry

Another game that I've had for ages but not been able to really play, and again I've now played it through to completion.

Far Cry is set on a remote desert island where mysterious experiments are being carried out - think Lost with more guns. It's technically stunning with great water, open spaces and lush scenery. The enemy AI is really good and you find yourself in some great gun battles. There's some cool vehicle sequences and some great set-pieces.

However, about 2/3 of the way through the game it really runs out of steam and becomes a "run through the corridors" blastfest instead of the innovative game it has been before.

Call of Duty 2

This was one of the first games that wouldn't run on my old PC, becoming virtually unplayable after the first level or so. Now, with my shiny new graphics card it runs great and I've finally completed it!

As shooters go, it's a lot of fun, but as World War 2 games go, I think we've reached a bit of a plateau. After Medal of Honour blew everyone away with the Omaha beach landing stuff, it's going to be hard to keep up that level of innovation. It's technically great with exciting missions, but is just missing that "wow" factor that games need these days. Evo

World of Warcraft offering free 10-day trial

After yet another friend recommended World of Warcraft to me this weekend, I was about to cave and pay for the full game to try it out. Luckily, the same buddy told me about a free 10-day trial that is available.

Some things to note that aren't immediately clear from the trial offer:

Technically, it's only for the European servers and it does require a credit card (but that can be a US one and the subscription is not automatically charged after the trial period).

Other drawbacks are a huge download (3Gb+ with all the patches/updates), which could take a long time depending on your connection speed.

Half-Life 2

Let me answer 3 questions. Is it the best game ever? No. Is it as good as Half Life? Not entirely, clarification to follow. Is it ONE OF the best games ever and a must buy? Yes.

Half-Life was one of those rare games that came along at just the right moment and without reinventing the wheel, did pretty much exactly what everyone else was doing but improved it just enough and had the complete package to make people think it was revolutionary. At the time it came out it was just another one of many first-person-shooters on the market, but it's immersive environment and story, along with a couple of gameplay innovations, tied it all together in a package that was pretty much perfect. It went on to become one of the biggest games ever, and is one of the first games mentioned when people take about "the best game ever".
